Ivory Coast Senufo wooden Mask (038)

The Senufo are an artistic people who live along the northernmost border of the Ivory Coast in western sub-saharan Africa. The Senufo have special castes for artists who are highly respected.
This kpelie mask a human face with projections all around is said to remind initiates of human imperfection. Danced by men associated with the Poro society these masks perform as female characters.
