Burkina Faso Bwa wooden Sun Mask (002)

This is a traditional Bwa ceremonial wooden mask hand crafted in Burkina Faso. This circular mask represents the sun is used during dances to celebrate the farming season.
 
The Bwa people carve masks which represent protective bush spirits. The masks are painted with a clay paint and smoked over a special fire to give them an aged look. During ceremonies highly skilled dancers are the most impressive and powerful presence in the villages. Ceremonies are performed on various occasions including initiations harvest and funerals.
 
Approximately 16"  in diameter and 4" deep.
 
Each African mask is an "original" work of art individually hand carved; no two are exactly alike and the original nature of tribal art will be reflected by variances from the African mask as shown. The mask in the photo is the mask you will receive.
