This soapstone sculpture features five different animal heads. This sculpture was carved from one piece of serpentine stone by a Shona artist in Zimbabwe. The carving is approximately 7" tall, 2.5" wide, and 4.5" long.

The Shona art movement began in the late 1950s when artists began expressing their creativity by carving locally available stone. I bought my first piece of Shona art in 1985. It was a small bust that I treasure to this day.

Soapstone is soft and the detail of these animals has been carved out of the polished stone. If you want to learn more about Shona art, how to care for sculpture if it has been scratched or damaged, or the different types of stone they use, we suggest the website www.guruve.com.
