Shona Art Carved Butter Jade Rhinoceros - Zimbabwe

This butter jade sculpture is carved in the shape of an elephant. This sculpture was carved from one piece of serpentine stone by a Shona artist in Zimbabwe. The carving is approximately 2.5" tall, 1" wide, and 5" long.

The Shona art movement began in the late 1950s when artists began expressing their creativity by carving locally available stone. I bought my first piece of Shona art in 1985. It was a small bust that I treasure to this day.
